Why ChatGPT recommends your competitor
A customer asks ChatGPT for a recommendation and gets a competitor's name. Not a list of ten links: one or two businesses, described in a confident paragraph. If you're not in that paragraph, you weren't considered.
It's rarely because the competitor is better. It's usually because they're easier for the assistant to find and understand.
ChatGPT searches Bing more than you think

When ChatGPT searches the web, the pages it cites overlap far more with Bing's results than with Google's. Many South African businesses have never opened Bing Webmaster Tools or claimed a Bing Places listing. A competitor who has is simply more visible to the tool your customer is using.
It trusts what others say about you
Assistants don't only read your website. They weigh what directories, review sites, news and industry lists say about you. Perplexity is the extreme case: only about 13% of its citations point to a business's own site (5W AI Citation Source Index, 2026). If a competitor appears in the lists and directories an assistant trusts and you don't, the assistant has no evidence to put you forward.
It needs you to be unambiguous
If your business is called one thing on your website, another on Google Maps and a third in an old directory, an assistant can't be sure these are the same business. It won't risk recommending something it can't pin down. Consistent details, plus structured data that states them outright, remove the doubt.
Four things that change the answer
- Get onto Bing properly. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and claim Bing Places.
- Publish structured data. Organisation, services, prices and FAQs in JSON-LD on every page that matters.
- Fix your details everywhere. Same name, phone number and website on your site, Google, Bing and every directory.
- Earn the third-party mentions. The directories, review platforms and industry lists the assistants actually cite for your kind of business.
Then test it: ask the assistants the questions your customers ask, and record what they say before and after. That's the only honest way to know whether anything moved.
